The Death Of Twitter, Really…?

Controversy has risen in the social marketing world that pits one microblogging service against another.  Yes it is predicted in this article with the onslaught of retweets that maybe Facebook could be the death of Twitter.

The author, Alan Wolk,  feels that Facebook is geared more towards creating and maintaining real relationships, whereas Twitter has turned into more or less of a carnival atmosphere with people showing off their knowledge of social media skills.

Alan says that Facebook already does everything that Twitter already does but better, and you are not limited by the 140 character rule on Facebook.

Alan raises some very good points in favor of Facebook, and he does give Twitter a brownie point in that it does encourage relationships with strangers.  I think it really boils down to a personal preference as to which one a person likes better.

Personal Preference

I like and use them both, but more of Twitter than Facebook.  Could be because I have just grown more accustomed to Twitter.  I can say that at one point on Facebook that all of the different applications added much confusion for me.

I was getting notices about a gift of sunshine or a cup of coffee, etc. , or someone wrote on a wall that I don’t have.  And if I want to see what they wrote I have to install that application.  I’ll admit that gets a bit under my skin and for reasons like that I leaned more towards Twitter.

Nevertheless, Alan has written an eyebrow raising article that may create a little buzz in the community.  What are your thoughts on the death of Twitter?

The Twitter Blog Design Evolution

The Twitter Blog Design Evolution has arrived.  I found this great post on Mashable about How Twitter Will Change Blog Design In 2009.

Mashable is certainly someone to listen to in the Web 2.0 and Social Networking arena.  If you are not incorporating Twitter in your marketing plans, perhaps you should think twice about that.

Twitter – 6 Cool Tools To Enhance Your Experience

Twitter is all the rage now.  I have to admit that at first I thought it was the craziest idea.  You know…people sitting there shooting the breeze talking about nothing.  Aha! But I went to go see what it was about and it is addicting I should say.

True, there is some yak yak going on there, but it is a social networking site.  And from the name you are supposed to socialize, henceforth the word social….right?  Sooo then people are using the site for what it was developed for…right?

Makes sense to me….

So if you want to join Twitter, head on over there and sign up free of charge (of course after you read this).  And if you are already a member and want to add some more functionality with Twitter, I have found some really cool applications you can use.

1. 100 Free Twitter Icons

You can pick till you are blue in the face from these awesome icons.  They come in a variety of formats (jpg, psd, png, ico, etc.) and you can do anything with them but sell them.

2. Tweetlater

One of the features that everybody uses with this application is to send automatic thank you messages (called Direct Messages in Twitter) when someone follows you.  It’s a good idea to send a quick line about yourself, but don’t put any sales material in this message.

Can you imagine meeting someone for the first time, and in the first couple of words after stating their name begin trying to sale you something?  That’s the equivalent of putting sales material in a direct message.  That is not what it should be used for and you will be looked upon as a spammer.

3. Desktop Applications

Well, as it says….these are for your desktop.  There are lots of apps for both Windows and Mac.  These will keep a fresh view of twitter without you having to refresh your webpage, and allow you to comment right on your desktop.  Out of the Windows selections, I have used these three and I prefer Tweetdeck:

Try whichever ones appeal to you and make your choice depending on what YOUR preferences are.  Just because I don’t like the app doesn’t mean that you won’t.

4. Mr. Tweet

This application will suggest people of interest for you to follow.  In other words, you can use this as a relationship building tool.  Take a look at each person and see if their bio interests you, and if so then just click the button to follow them.  Simple? Yep

5. TwitterCounter

Use this application to see how your presence is growing (how many people are following you).  You can see a graph of your history the last 5 months or so, and will give you predictions of your future following rate.  Included with this application is a counter ticklet you can put on your website to show your number of followers.

6. Twitter Grader

This grades the “overall power of your profile” at Twitter.  It takes into consideration the number of followers you have, the number of updates (posts) and a few other things that is explained at their site.  It’s a interesting number to know about yourself compared to others.

It has another little snipit tool that you can use to post information that you find while surfing the net.  Try it out and see how you like it.

There are so many applications out there for Twitter that I couldn’t name them if I tried.  However, these are the very tools that I use for Twitter and am happy with them.
